Congratulations to our HS Girls Soccer Team! They won their Quarterfinal game and will now advance to the 3A State Semi Finals on Saturday, May 20th. They are playing Kent Denver at the All City Stadium at 11:00 am.
Congratulations to the JH Girls Soccer Team! They won the League Championship vs DSST on Monday, 5/16/17. They were undefeated the whole season!
Congratulations also go to our JH Baseball team for making the first round of league playoffs. They play Clear Creek today at 4:00 here at the school. So come and cheer on your Wildcats!
For the second year in a row, all Academy music ensembles: band, orchestra, and choir, swept the ratings and earned GOLD at the Elitch Gardens Music Festival!

Greetings Wildcat Family,
I wanted to take this time to share some updates to our lunch and sign out procedures to better alert you of what we have in place to best serve the needs of our school community.
As you may be aware, The Academy has a closed campus policy when it comes to lunch activities. We want to celebrate the achievements of our seniors, who have accrued a 3.0 GPA from the previous semester, by allowing them the opportunity to receive open lunch privileges. These expectations were presented to our students in grade level assemblies and applications provided to students who qualified. For clarity purposes, off campus means anyone leaving the physical building, including leaving to hang out in their car. If there is ever a need for a student to get an item from their car, we will do our best to work with them to retrieve it.
Recently, we have had issues with 11th and 12th grade students who have not yet earned open lunch privileges leaving without permission. This is obviously against the Academy's policy, is a safety concern, and sets a poor example for our younger students. Due to this, we have had to utilize our limited resources to find and redirect these students to their assigned locations; which has greatly impacted our learning community due to important members of our staff having to leave their strategic roles to follow up with these students. I plan on meeting with the 11th and 12th grade students during their class meetings with Mr. Clark to address these issues. It is my hope that you partner with us in letting your student(s) know that he/she currently is not able to leave school for lunch unless they have the approval of administration.
Our previous procedure, for students who leave without permission, was a warning letter that reminds them about the policy, the second offense is a lunch detention, and the third occurrence is a suspension. Effective immediately, administration has met and decided that in order to correct some of these ongoing issues, and in respect to school and student safety, any student who leaves campus without a parent coming in to sign them out will receive an in school suspension.
At this time, we will be leaving the open lunch procedure in place, but only seniors with a 3.0 GPA or higher are eligible to leave campus. We reserve the right to make changes and/or eliminate the policy altogether if it continues to be an issue that disrupts the learning community. Our initial intention was to re-evaluate the GPA’s of our current seniors for open lunch during the spring semester; however, due to the aforementioned issues, we have not yet begun that process. If the issues improve, we will look at potentially opening up the open lunch privilege to additional seniors and continue the procedure next year for our current 11th graders.
Finally, I wanted to touch base regarding proper sign out procedures at The Academy. We have had numerous instances of emails being sent by students from their parent’s emails, this is obviously a concern. Please refer to the Academy Handbook (Page 19) that states that “Parents must be physically present to sign out their student.” For students who drive themselves to and from school, we would require both an email and phone call from the parent stating their approval.
Please feel free to give me a call or email if you have any questions. Our concern is always the safety of our students and our campus. Currently, we do not have the resources available to continue addressing these issues we are experiencing. Your help on this matter will help us send a clear message about our expectations for our students during lunch and will help curtail the increase of incidents that are occurring.

Congratulations to Alexis Loera for being named Sportswoman of Colorado for high school soccer. Alexis was recognized at the Sportswoman of Colorado Banquet on March 12th. We are very proud of Alexis and her accomplishments. She is pictured with her parents Tia and Juan Loera who deserve some recognition as well. Congratulations again on this prestigious honor!
On March 5-7 seven Academy students attended Colorado Close Up. Colorado Close Up has given students an educational experience in civics since 1979. This year our students were able to participate in a mock trial with the Colorado Supreme Court, sit in the Colorado House and Senate Sessions, meet our legislators, tour the U.S. Mint, tour CBS News 4, hear from our Lieutenant Governor, interview a Lobbyist, and attend a House committee meeting! They learned a ton and had a great time as well.
This past weekend was action packed with Academy High School varsity and girls Jr High basketball.
The Jr High A & B teams were undefeated through the regular season and then captured the League Tournament Championship, Saturday March 4th. The boys varsity had a season record of 17-6 setting a school record of most wins in a season. They went on a 15-game win streak which included beating Jefferson Academy for the 1st time in school history. They finished 2nd in both the Frontier League and Districts this season and earned an 8th straight appearance in the State Tournament. The girls varsity also had a record setting season. They are the Frontier League District Champions and also earned an appearance in the State Tournament while earning All Academic 2016-2017.
The following players have been selected to play in this year's All-Star Game which will be played on March 18th at The Academy (6 girls & 7:30 pm boys) Alex Rodriquez, Diego Gonzalez, Ronnie Garcia, Peyton Zamora, Garren Lahman, Mary Turner, and Dane Olson. We invite you to come out and cheer on our Wildcats.
We will be continuing our planned schedule today. All Band A, B and C groups need to attend rehearsal with Mrs. Hann today. This will give us the opportunity to play together as a team and play through our music.

We were so lucky to have had the opportunity to be apart of the SOS Community!! We had the best time at Keystone Ski Resort. The weather was perfect, and so were the views. Our group divided up into skiers and snowboarders. We had the best time learning how to perfect our skills and enjoy the mountain. It was a great opportunity for students to enjoy, respect, and appreciate the beautiful mountains we have in Colorado. We are hoping to go again, as we are all loving the mountain air and beautiful scenery. Thanks for everyone who was apart of our Ski Trip 2017!!! We had the best time!!

The format of Conferences this year will be a little different than in years past. This year we encourage you to bring your student as we are utilizing a student- led philosophy. We are changing the format so students take more responsibility in their success. We feel that there will be more useful conversations as students give their perspectives on what is going well and what they need help with.

Yesterday both girls/boys varsity basketball teams played Jefferson Academy at the Pepsi Center, what an experience for our athletes! We had a fantastic turnout of student body, family, friends, cheer squad, administrators many many more, the coaches and players would like to extend a huge "THANK YOU" for your support! The season isn't not over yet join the teams Wednesday, Feb 8th, as they travel to Pinnacle (84th & Huron) for conference games.

You may opt your student out of these study halls by reading and completing the following authorization. It’s that time of year to start thinking about course selections for next year!
The link to SignUpGenius.com is being emailed to parents/guardians of current 6th graders in order for families to sign up for individual or group meetings with Mrs. Drake, the Junior High Counselor, to select courses for 7th grade. These meetings will take place during December and January.
The same process will occur in January for current 7th graders and their families.
The Academy Football Team had several players and families help pack 2000 Thanksgiving Meals for the Feed 8000 Food for Hope Project. These meals will be distributed to familes across Adams County who are disadvantaged and/or recently homeless. Thanks to everyone who participated and helped make our community better!

All 11th grade students will take the PSAT exam on October 19, 2016. In an effort to minimize noise distractions, all 9th and 10th grade students will be out of the building all day on college visits and 12th grade students will be participating in post-graduate workshops from 7:30-10:35 am. After this time, 12th grade students will be given the option to opt-out of the remainder of the day. If you wish to opt your student out, please return the attached permission slip to the Administrative Office by Friday, October 14th. No student will be allowed to sign out or leave school grounds without this form on file or a parent/guardian notifying the attendance office. Students who elect to remain at school will be asked to work on course assignments in the Summit.

This is for students who need to have retakes done or have not had a picture taken at all this year. In order to have retakes, the student will need to bring the original picture packet the day of retakes. Students need to sign up in the Main Office or Admin Office.

This year we are approaching parent-teacher conferences differently than we have in the past. We have found that with the advent of online grades, and greater communication expectations for staff members, the need for the traditional open house style of conferencing is not the best use of time for families or teachers. The new schedule will be as follows:

The open house portion serves as a meet and greet with the teachers and allows parents and guardians the freedom to prioritize and focus on classes they may have particular questions for. All teachers will have syllabi and contact information available in their classrooms.
This will be a fantastic evening to meet all of your student’s teachers, see where they will be spending their days, and formally kick of the 2016-2017 school year.

Students will rotate through a schedule to meet teachers and take part in different activities. We want to start our students on the right foot- engaged, excited, and ‘on-board’ for The Academy Way.

This will be an A/B day combined. The regular schedule will be amended so students can visit all 8 of their classes.

All the First Place State Winners will be honored with display on the Wall of Fame of the 2016 State-Fish Art Expo held in Huntsville, Alabama during the FLW Cup, the World Championship of Bass Fishing, August 5-7th.
Thinking of joining us, but not sure what you want to play? Come try out all of the instruments at our annual Instrument Petting Zoo! At the petting zoo, you can hold and play all of the different band and orchestra instruments under the guidance of an instrument specialist. We’ll even have the music store on hand to get you started with an instrument and folks from the Broomfield Youth Symphony offering summer jump start lessons! This is also an opportunity to ask questions of Mr. Hebert regarding what it takes to be in the band or orchestra.

The ACS music department took four ensembles to this year’s Elitch Gardens Music festival on Saturday, May 7. All four groups - Festival Band, Chamber Orchestra, Festival Choir, and Guitar Ensemble earned the highest GOLD rating. This is the third year in a row Academy has earned gold! In an effort to minimize noise distractions, all 9th and 10th graders will be attending college visits. Students will choose between University of Colorado at Boulder, University of Colorado at Denver, Metropolitan State University, or Colorado Christian University. Students will share their choice during Pride Time in the next couple of weeks. Permission slips are due to Pride Time teachers no later than April 15th.
12th grade students will be given the option to opt out of attending school. You may opt your student out of attending school this day by reading and completing this authorization. This form must be returned by April 15th to the Admin Office. No student will be allowed to sign out or leave school grounds without this form being on file. Students who elect not to opt out of attending school will be asked to work on course assignments in the tutoring center.

2016 Southern Colorado "you can do the cube" Rubik's Competition. Grades 4-10 competed in 5 teams from The Academy. We also had 20 students compete in the individual competition. There are 70+ students in the Rubik's club this year and 38 of them competed in the event.

Dear Academy Students, Staff, and Families,
After a thoughtful and thorough interview process, we are excited to announce that Dr. Sarah Gould has been selected as the new principal for our 3-6 Elementary beginning in the 2016-2017 school year! We are confident that Dr. Gould can and will carry on the school’s mission, vision, and values and lead us into a great future for The Academy!
The team followed an extensive process to bring us to this point. To give you a little insight:
- We screened over 25 resumes
- We did phone interviews with 10 principal candidates
- We brought back 5 of those to do demonstration lessons and lesson evaluations
- 3 of those 5 were then chosen to return for a live interview and data analysis demonstration
Dr. Gould comes to us from Adams 50 school district where she has served as the principal of Hodgkins Elementary for the past 8 years, with a total of 13 years of experience in PreK-12 settings, including charter school experience. Some of the exciting highlights about Dr. Gould are that she:
- has been a classroom teacher, literacy coach, and special education teacher.
- took a school out of Turnaround to Improvement status.
- is a trainer in 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Thinking Maps, and Write from the Beginning . . . and Beyond, our K-12 writing program.
- works to mentor new principals in her district.
- has brought in over $1.2 million in grants.
- serves as the core coordinator and adjunct faculty at Regis University in the Masters of Education in Teacher Leadership and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education programs.
- has been published in numerous news articles at the national and international level.
- is currently working with Dr. Robert Marzano on a publication on Parent Engagement Plans
We know everyone is anxious to meet Dr. Gould and we will announce those dates and times very soon, once we are able to coordinate with her schedule and ours. We expect to have one meet and greet for the staff and two for the community (before and after spring break).

Students had the courage to ski the Imperial Chair Lift (highest lift in North America), and had some great turns on some difficult runs.
Students learned how to ski green, blue, and black runs.
We had the best time, and I am so proud of the courage and respect The Academy Students show all over Colorado especially the beautiful Breckenridge Ski Resort.
The Great Kindness Challenge is nation wide week dedicated to performing as many acts of kindness as possible. Last year The Academy's Elementary School helped to set a new World Record for The Largest Collage of Cut-out handprints. We helped produce a number of the 181,946 collected handprints from 594 schools, and on May 11th, a team of energetic volunteers installed 104,108 handprints on the walls of the Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital. Over 6,000 square feet of wall space was blanketed with love which brightened the spirits of both the hospital patients and their families. PHOTOS
This week kicks off the school’s second year participating in The Great Kindness Challenge. The Elementary school will be reading books on Kindness, challenging each other to commit Random Acts of Kindness, creating Kind Cards for Kids, while working on completing 30 Acts of Kindness with their teacher and classmates.

The literacy team at The Academy is more excited about this night than any other we have hosted. This year we will be hosting Emmy award winning entertainer and author, TIM NOAH! Tim Noah is a songwriter and producer, nationally acclaimed recording artist, and star of stage and screen. His captivating performances and engaging storytelling magic touch the hearts and minds of all ages, inspiring them to dream.
On Family Literacy Night, we will celebrate with Tim Noah’s expression of writing and performing through poetry and song. The repetition and rhythm of his storytelling engages and pulls children in, holding their attention. In his book Country Store, Tim also emphasizes the importance of persistence and resilience, vital character traits for young children to learn and adopt. He also notes on the cover of the book “It’s All About the Journey”. This theme will shine throughout the night as the children listen to Tim Noah’s stories and songs.

Pride Paw Awards
It's that time again! We're gearing up to hold our end of semester Pride Pawdrawing! We'd love it if you'd like to round out your volunteer hours for the year by donating $10 gift cards (to anywhere kids might like) for our drawing. Over 1800 positive behavior referrals (Pride Paws) have been given out and we'd love to give then a little thank you for all their wonderful work! Our goal would be to give at least 10 out to Jr. High and 20 for High School.

General need typically get looked over but these donations are utilized by every member of the school and we can always use more!

It is that time of year again to secure your student’s spot here at The Academy for the 2016-2017 school year. Intent to Return Forms will be sent home with your student(s) on Tuesday, January 5th. Completed forms are due by Wednesday, January 13th to your student’s homeroom teacher for Elementary and Pride Time teacher for Secondary. If your form is not returned by January 13th, we cannot guarantee your student’s enrollment for the 2016-2017 school year. If you do not receive an Intent to Return from your student, please obtain one from the office.
Also, if you have other students that do not attend The Academy but would like them to attend for the 2016-2017 school year, you will need to complete the Lottery Application. Please be sure to indicate that they have siblings already attending The Academy so they receive sibling priority. The application is available on our website, on the Enrollment Information page. The lottery window closes on January 15th.
Happy New Year and welcome to 2016. A new semester is about to begin and we are all rested and rejuvenated from Winter Break. Before we jump into the new year I want to update you on changes to state testing information that applies to students in 10th and 11th grade. The Colorado Department of Education has just announced a change in required, college admissions testing for high school students in Colorado. The CDE has selected the SAT over the ACT, which has been the state’s college admissions test since 2001. This came as quite a surprise to schools and districts around the state. According to the CDE, the selection committee chose this assessment because of its alignment to the high school Colorado Academic Standards.
What this means for our students moving forward (unless the change is overturned):
- All sophomores will be required to take the PSAT.
- All juniors will be required to take the newly designed SAT.
- Both sophomores and juniors will take the designated test on campus during the state testing window from early March to late April (specific dates to be determined).
- PARCC exams in English language arts and math, part of the Colorado Measures of Academic Success system, will no longer be taken by 10th and 11th grade students in Colorado.
Unfortunately, this news doesn’t give schools much time to adjust. While we await additional testing details from the state we will begin revamping our test preparation materials, training for students and staff, and identifying the timeline, dates, and goals for the new tests. Until final decisions are made for this spring’s test, we will continue to follow our ACT prep program that is provided to all juniors during our Pride Time class. As of yesterday afternoon, it was reported that the Colorado Department of Education was working to create a transition plan that would have current 11th grade students take the ACT this year instead of the new SAT, although nothing has yet been confirmed. It does appear that the state will be moving forward with current 10th grade students taking the PSAT this spring and the SAT in 2017.
Rest assured that our talented staff at The Academy will continue to guide our students to their best-fit colleges and universities of choice. I am confident that regardless of the what tests are selected by the state, the results will show that our students are prepared for the post-secondary school of their choice. More information on testing will be emailed to you once is it released.

Miller-Carlson briefed teachers and staff at the Professional Development meeting this morning recapping the reason for this new hire. “After we hired Dave Flooden, current CFO, in 2012 we realized that what we needed was too much for one person. Tony was then brought on to consult with the Board for strategic plans and we saw how much value he could be as a full time member of The Academy family.”
Fontana owns his own consulting business, Performance Consulting, and has worked with eight other Colorado Charter Schools in the past. He specializes in coaching administrators in how to improve operational performance and instructional practices; budgetary efficiency; staff development; dashboards to improve performance; and governing board training.
“Having strong leadership is critical and we believe Tony is the person who can lead The Academy and continue our success toward meeting strategic goals.” Miller-Carlson.

35 High Schoolers participated in workshops on improvisation, technical theater, stage combat, playwriting, dance, and musical performance. They joined almost 5000 other Thespians (Theater Lovers!), watched top-notch plays and award winning student performance, as well as participating in the conference dance. This is the largest number of Academy Wildcats to attend the conference in recent history!!!
17 Junior High Schoolers participated in workshops on improvisation, technical theater, stage combat, and musical performance. This is the first time that the Academy Wildcats have attended the Junior Thescon. One of the highlights was the Academy students starting a dance party during the lunch break in which students from many other schools participated!

During the program, Pride Time will be dedicated to reviewing that week’s lesson and preparing the students for the ACT test that will take place on April 19th. The Academy will pay for the April 19th test and provide free ACT Prep books to each student.(If your student needs the writing portion please remember that you need to register and pay separately for this section, as it is not required at all schools.) Why is the ACT important to me? The ACT is a college entrance exam, which means colleges look at your score as a body of evidence to determine whether or not they will accept you into their institution. In general, if your GPA is low, a high ACT score could be the difference between getting in to college or not. ACT scores are used to award scholarships as well. Schools and other agencies that award scholarships will look at your GPA and ACT scores to determine whether or not you will be awarded any money and if so, how much.

Under all but the most extreme conditions, school officials have a responsibility to keep school in session. When the weather is bad, but school is open, parents must make a family decision regarding attendance or late arrival for their children. A personal contact by the parent or a written note to school officials will excuse a students’ late arrival or absence during these conditions.
Occasionally, the weather is severe enough that it is necessary to close schools in all or part of the district. When this occurs, it is extremely important that working parents have pre-arranged child care available to them. It is very important that parents make these arrangements now, since the weather is unpredictable and often we are hit with storms early in the school year.

Westminster, Co, November 9th, 2015 – Last Monday, The Academy hired Molly Grove, M.A. as their new Communications Coordinator. Grove will be working to develop and execute a comprehensive communications initiative that supports the school’s strategic plan while improving their internal and external communications. In addition to working on the school’s strategic plan, Grove will also be working to update The Academy’s online presence and media strategies.
The Academy is a charter school off W. 120th Avenue that serves to develop college ready, exemplary citizens by promoting excellence in academics, character, and relationship. Thespian Society is an honorary society for secondary students who are committed to the Theater Arts. Thespian Society member Aidan Feinstein designed and painted this lovely mural (with the help of Alison Archuleta among other Thespians).This mural ties together the traditional comedy/tragedy theatrical masks with the four C's of The Academy Thespians: Creativity, Commitment, Community, and Communication. Juniors of American Literature class involved in a Socratic Seminar discussing the theme of man vs. society in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
6th graders had a blast the week of September 21-25. They went on a 5 day field trip that included classes in climbing, rappelling, archery, riflery, survival skills and much much more!
Spanish teacher and world cultures icon Lauren Tauchman kept it close for most of the Academy 5k Family Fun Run. Tauchman pushed herself to the brink, but the Thespian Society runners were simply too much for her. "They were like rabid dogs. Every time I thought I might catch them, they would sprint ahead." said an exhausted Tauchman. She went on to say, "This won't happen again. I will train harder, and get those Thespian next year! Do you hear me Thespians, I will get you!!!" The Academy Thespians ran together for the first time this year. With little or no training, they took the determined Tauchman down. Thespian Vice President Eden Weisz said, "We made a commitment to beat Tauchman. As individuals we couldn't have done it, but as a community of Thespians we were victorious."
The first concert is at 6:30pm and features the Concert Orchestra, Concert Band, and Symphonic Band. The second concert is at 7:45pm and features the Jazz Band, Chamber Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and Symphonic Orchestra.
Both concerts are free and concessions will be available provided by AMP!

On October 8th our Seniors ran a college information fair for our Juniors during Pride Time. The idea was to give students a chance to research and present about a college of their choice and juniors to be introduced to colleges around the country.

Hailey finished 7th out of 55 runners in only her second cross country race. PTO presented the Academy with a check for $33,000 at the BOD meeting 6/15/15. They will be presenting another check later in the month as soon as all of the rest of the Spring Gala bid checks are received.
Academy students had the opportunity to attend the annual chalk art festival at Larimer square this summer. With twenty high schools participating in the youth challenge, Academy students were also able to be inspired by the talent of other high school students. Mrs. Smith guided students to create a design and then in collaboration they executed a wonderful masterpiece inspired by the surrealist art movement.

On May 2, students from the Academy band, orchestra, and choirs participated in the Elitch Gardens Music Festival. Each group went in front of a panel of judges who scored them based on their performance. All three groups earned the highest GOLD rating!

While they were there, they visited the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Central Park, and the Juilliard School. It was so fun to see the places that inspired so much film, literature, and television!

ACT National Testing Day is tomorrow, April 28th. While the testing day falls on a late state Tuesday, I am requiring all Juniors to attend school at the regularly scheduled time of 7:30 AM. ACT has a mandated start time of no later than 9 AM, therefore I would like all students to be on campus no later than 7:30. Testing will begin at 8 AM and will end at approximately 11:50 AM. The North Gym will be open to students other than Juniors who may be attending school early that day due to rides.

On April 21st, the ACS Symphonic Band made its 8th appearance at the CHSAA Large Group Festival. Each year the band performs at the festival and receives critique, comments, and ratings from respected judges. This year’s band received a rating of Excellent from the judges! Junior Emily Marcus was honored Thursday, April 16th in Denver at the Capital Building for her runner-up entry in the Colorado Charter Schools Art Contest. Students K-12 were asked to draw themselves as future leaders. Emily was congratulated after the rally by Governor Hickenlooper. Her father Matt and her art teacher Mr. Meyer were there to support her in her great achievement.

Senior Trevor Weschler participated in the 64th annual Colorado All-State Band at the University of Northern Colorado held April 9, 10, and 11. Trevor was one of 108 band students selected across the state from over 900 who auditioned to perform with the Symphonic Band. At auditions, he earned the spot of second chair! The band performed under the guest direction of Ray Cramer, a very well-known and recognized band director. Trevor was an awesome representative for The Academy through the entire weekend!

The ACS Science Olympiad team recently competed in the Northern Colorado Science Olympiad Competition at Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins. The competition was on Saturday, March 7. Honorable mentions go to Tomas Cabrera for 2nd place in an event called It's About Time. Also, Thomas Machammer ranked 5th in the Bungee Drop event. The team unfortunately scored one point too low to move on to the state wide competition.
Ms. Laimans and the science department have been having some fun in Chemistry class with liquid nitrogen. Whenever possible, we look for ways to make learning interactive and fun. Ms. Laimans demonstrated the power of liquid nitrogen by freezing and breaking different items in class - including pennies, flowers, and oranges. This provided a great visualization for material that was previously studied in class.
Yoona was recently awarded the Daniels Fund Scholarship. The Daniels Scholarship Program is a four-year annually-renewable college scholarship for graduating high school seniors who demonstrate exceptional character, leadership, and a commitment to serving their communities. We are so very proud of Yoona and wish her the best in college!

The Academy elementary is participating in the Great Kindness Challenge, Monday, January 26th through Friday, January 30th. Each student and classroom will attempt to show fifty acts of kindness. Students will display daily activities that express how much they care for themselves, the school and others! At the end of the week each classrooms' door will decorated in a kindness theme. We are all excited to be part of a week long challenge that we are sure will positively impact all who are involved.
On February 2nd:

Friday, January 30th, marked that last day of the challenge, which ended with a door decorating contest. Winners will be announced Monday, February 2nd. The winners from each grade level will receive an invitation to an ice cream social in the Elementary Cafeteria! However, what's really exciting is that the culminating activity is a reflection on kindness, where students will trace their hand on a piece of paper and decorate it using the theme of kindness. These hand-shaped cutouts will be briefly displayed before being sent out in hopes of contributing to a more collective project "Most Kind-Hearted Handprints" that could allow us to be in the Guinness Book of World Records!

Emily Bunch and Dahlia Ortiz have been selected to participate in the University of Colorado "Trying on Teaching" program this spring. Middle school musicians from across the region rehearse and perform while being taught by CU music education students and a select group of high school musicians from schools in the area. Emily and Dahlia had to be recommended by ACS and then apply to the program. Congratulations to both!

This past Tuesday, 12/9/14, Whole Foods at 120th/Vrain celebrated their Grand Opening and presented our Academy PTO with a $1000 check. This money will be used to purchase gymnastic mats for our North Campus. We are all very excited our PTO was one of the five local schools to be chosen as a partner in this community giving.
Today was a very exciting day in Academy PTO history as the school was presented with the first of many checks to fulfill the strategic initiatives. PTO President Greg Weaver and PTO VIce President Holly Wogoman presented the $11,170.21 check to our four level principals (Cody Clark, Leigh Florita, Mitzy Lurvey, not pictured Peggy Heath & Amber Coniff) and David Floodeen, CFO. Thank you to the entire Academy community for supporting all of our PTO events as we continue to move forward with support for our school.

This year we took our skills to new heights in 3 days of fun filled excitement! With 4,600 fellow Colorado theater students we had the opportunity to attend expert workshops on acting, dancing, directing, lighting and sound, preparing for college, and guidance on how to land the role of your dreams. Our power packed conference included student performed, main stage evening entertainment at The Bellco Theater. Along with the Frequent Fliers ThesCon Circus, Thursday evening we saw the play Cash on Delivery, while Friday night’s ceremonies brought us Les Miserables, followed by a huge dance party. Saturday we continued learning with a variety of workshops on playwriting, vocal boot camp, character exploration, and aerial flying! We enjoyed an amazing time and want to thank our Theater Director, Mr. Zeigen and our Chaperones, Mr. Barry Hendrick, Mrs. Christina Lucero, and Ms. Eva Norton. During the coming four-day weekend of Friday, October 3 through Monday, October 6, the Colorado Department of Transportation intends to close Lowell Boulevard from the intersection at 120th Avenue south to our east (secondary) parking lot entrance. Their purpose for the closure will be to replace the islands on Lowell Boulevard.
School is closed on Friday, October 3 and Monday, October 6, however activities are still occurring at the school including sporting events and our Homecoming dance. Both parking lots will still be accessible using 118th Avenue as the entrance. I have included a map below with green lines showing routes that will be available during this weekend.
While any closure is not ideal, we are pleased that CDOT has worked so graciously with us to do this particular work during times when our daily traffic will not be affected.

We are in the midst of a pretty severe traffic problem caused by the construction along 120th Avenue. This is creating a lot of stress for our Academy families, especially the those with students at both campuses.
Unfortunately, the construction is beyond our control. In looking for solutions involving what we can control, we are going to temporarily change the start and end times for North Campus ONLY by five minutes. This means, we will start five minutes later at 8:00, and end five minutes later at 3:25. Tuesdays we will start at 9:35 and end at 3:25.
This change is effective Monday, 9/8/14 and will be in effect until further notice.

Back to School Night for Secondary Students (7-12) will be held on Tuesday, August 26, from 6 to 8 PM. The purpose of this event is for parents and guardians to be able to meet their child’s teacher and become familiar with classroom expectations.
The schedule for the evening is as follows:
6:00 to 6:20 – Welcome Assembly in the South Gym, led by Mrs. Florita and Mr. Clark
6:20 to 7:30 – Open House.
7:30 to 8:00 – Reception in the South Gym. Refreshments and cookies served.
The event this year offers a different format from years past in order to offer a more efficient and productive evening. The open house portion will serve as a meet and greet with the teachers and allow parents and guardians the freedom to prioritize and focus on classes they may have particular questions for. If you feel additional discussion is needed with a particular teacher regarding your student’s needs please set an appointment so that you may discuss at a later date. All teachers will have syllabi and contact information available in their classrooms. Teachers will also be available for conversation during the reception.
This will be a fantastic evening to meet all of your student’s teachers, see where they will spending their days, and formally kick of the 2014-2015 school year.

At this morning's meeting, CDOT confirmed that turn lanes on to and off of Lowell will be open during our pick up and drop off times. Even with this commitment, still expect an impact on our traffic flow and please plan accordingly to allow extra time.
I have had many questions from parents of students who ride RTD. The RTD route that previously stopped at the shelter at 120th and Lowell still stops at that location, however, this means riders are walking through some construction to get to the school. CDOT stated this morning that the permanent bus stop will be reopened within the next three weeks. Until then, we recommend using the stop located at the intersection of 120th and Bradburn and then walking through the Bradburn neighborhood to the school. This would allow students to avoid walking through both the 120th and Lowell project and the housing project currently working on the east end of the Bradburn neighborhood near the school. Again, RTD still stops at 120th and Lowell, but until the permanent bus stop is reopened, the safer option is getting off at 120th and Bradburn.

As you may have noticed, the Colorado Department of Transportation has begun a major construction project at the intersection of 120th Avenue and Lowell Boulevard. The project started in June and is scheduled to be completed in January. This construction will impact traffic flow during drop off and pick up times, thus please allow extra time in your travels.
The main concern currently is the right turn lanes both onto and off of Lowell. CDOT has assured us those lanes will be open to ease traffic flow during pick up and drop off times. If you visit the school between 8:30 AM - 2:30 PM, expect those lanes to be closed until further notice.
We will do our best to communicate any updates we receive from CDOT as the project progresses.
Even if their schedule did not list a locker, each student on the secondary side has been assigned one. When students pick up their schedules on the first day of classes, locker numbers and combinations will be listed on the schedule page or alternate measures will be taken by Academy administration to pass along this information. If there are issues with your student’s locker, please have them fill out a locker maintenance form in the main office or during Pride Time the first week of school. Change requests for upper or lower lockers are fulfilled on a need basis first.

Also, as part of our change to our new authorizer (Charter School Institute) we have also moved to a different Student Information System called PowerSchool. PowerSchool contains most of the same features you were accustomed to such as checking grades and attendance. The staff has been working hard to get all of the student information, schedules, and records switched over to the new system, but as always with something new, we expect surprises and glitches. Login information and parent instructions for logging on to the system will go out as soon as we have the system up and running.

Our Soccer and Baseball teams at our pep rally as they prepared for their state tournament games on May 9th & 10th. Baseball made it to the first round of the 3A State Baseball Tournament. Soccer made it to the second round of the 3A State Soccer Tournament. The round of 16. Good job Wildcats!
The 3A District Boys High School Baseball Tournament is Saturday, May 10th at Adams State University in Alamosa, CO. The Academy plays at 12:30 vs. Gunnison HS. If we win, we would then play at 3:00 pm.
8th grade speech students spoke at our very first annual Speaking Forum. Meagan Day (read by Mrs. Richter), Mary Turner, and Josiah Villarreal gave their speeches to 7th and 8th grade students ranging from an informative speech to an instructional speech. These students did a fantastic job!

Jr High Camp :
Jr. High Pre-Season skills camp for girls entering 7th - 8th grade. Boys entering 6th - 8th grade are welcome to attend. This camp will review the fundamentals of the sport and increase court knowledge to prepare players for the Jr. High season.

Cost per camp is $45/player which includes a T-Shirt. All funds benefit the volleyball program. A one time, total family discount of $10 is available for siblings.

ACS performed at the annual Elitch Gardens Music Festival for the first time ever. Judges listen and rate the ensembles, then award medals based on how the group performed. Our orchestra earned the Silver Medal and our band earned the highest rating Gold Medal.

Sophie Park, a third grade student here at The Academy, recently participated in the Kawai Piano Solo competition hosted by the Boulder Piano Gallery. Sophie won 2nd place in the Division I group. Congratulations Sophie!
On Monday, April 21st there was an assembly with all High School students themed "Making Positive Choices." Officer Wilbur with the Westminster Police Department partnered with the Junior class student council members to inform students about the dangers of drugs and alcohol as well as how to make positive choices. This has been an annual event that coincides with prom.

Nathanael Mena Mijangos Jr's "Yarn Bowl" has been accepted for Plinth Gallery's first annual Metroclay 303 exhibit. Metroclay 303 is a ceramic art competition where Nathanael's work will be competing against the work of high school students throughout the Front Range region of Colorado. The Plinth Gallery is located at 3520 Brighton Blvd, Denver, CO 80216. The opening reception and exhibit opens on Friday,May 2nd from 5-9 pm. Please join us in supporting the exhibited work of a very dedicated artist.
ACT testing for all juniors will take place on the morning of April 23rd. During the ACT test our ninth and tenth grade students will be participating in the PLAN test. Like the EXPLORE test taken in junior high, the PLAN will prepare our students to find success on the ACT. Both tests will be administered during the times of 7:30 am to 12:00 pm. Once the tests are complete, we will hold lunch, advisory, and fourth period as regularly scheduled.

Four Academy musicians performed at the April 12th CHSAA solo and ensemble festival at Legacy High School. Kevin Ordonez played a solo and earned an excellent rating. Amber Gilpin, Samantha Swanson, and Mayan Veno played a trio together and earned a superior rating. Congrats to all performers!
The Academy Symphonic Band attended the CHSAA Large Group Festival at Rock Canyon High School on April 9th. The band performed very difficult music and earned ratings of excellent and superior. This is the seventh appearance by the band at the festival and ACS has consistently come away with the highest ratings. Congrats, band!

Academy student Maya Elizabeth Newman recently participated in an intellectual and personality competition. Based on her interview Maya Elizabeth was invited to compete regionally for the Denver title. She made top ten which qualified her to compete in the National Competition in Orlando, Florida. Maya Elizabeth and her mother traveled to Orlando and both had a wonderful learning experience.
The competition consisted of four age divisions with Maya Elizabeth in the younger 7 - 9 year old category. The girls represented the Cities of America with 71 cities included. Maya Elizabeth's ability to interview and respond to questions in a very intellectual way under the spot light and in front of hundreds of people in the audience was something we are very proud of. Both Maya Elizabeth and her mother believe our school played a big part in it: one of the many things she talked about was her love for reading, and that is something she has learned at The Academy. The competition consisted of 230 girls from all over the country and Maya Elizabeth placed in the TOP 10! It is important to point out that from the several girls in all four age divisions that represented Denver, Maya Elizabeth was the only person to make it to the very end. She came home with a trophy and a positive experience that she will carry through out her life. This was no beauty pageant nor vacation but hard work and well worth it!

Senior Wildcat Raeanne Sanchez signed her letter of intent on March 12, 2014 to play soccer for Western Nebraska Community College. Congratulations!
The event is on Friday, March 14th from 7-10pm at Noah's Event Center in Bradburn. Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased from the music teachers, main office, or music boosters. Tickets are limited, so buy them early!

These courses will complement our existing AP courses to offer a more robust college-level curriculum to our high school students. Colleges often grant placement and course credit to students that obtain high scores on the AP exams. Teachers have been AP trained and their course syllabi have been audited and approved by the College Board.

Senior wildcat Jordan Gillmore has been accepted to the University of Colorado at Boulder! Jordan was awarded the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship and with that has earned a full-ride scholarship package to attend.

Parsons Theatre in the Northglenn Recreation Center and includes two performances for school groups on Wednesday, April 30 and Thursday, May 1 at 10 a.m. Tickets are $4 each for school groups of 10 or more when paid in advance. Tickets for the general public are $7 students/seniors and $8 adults and can be purchased in advance at the Northglenn Recreation Center or from a cast member.
Northglenn Youth Theatre is a nationally recognized dynamic theatrical experience for children ages 8-18 performing since 1994. The D.L. Parsons Theatre is a 302-seat venue owned and operated by the City of Northglenn located ½ mile south of 120th Ave. and Grant St. in Northglenn, Colorado.

Essentially, every student in the high school chooses a poem to memorize and recites it in a class competition. The winners of those class competitions go on to our high school wide competition. The winner of this competition goes to the state competition.
Our competition will be occurring on February 12th. This is a Grades 9 – 12 event.

Senior Trevor Weschler has auditioned and been accepted to the 2015 Colorado All-State Honor Band at UNC in April. Trevor was one of 908 musicians across the state to audition for the band - only 109 were selected to participate in the advanced group. Congratulations, Trevor!

This past Fall all of Dr. Laughlin's 5th grade students entered into a Poetry Contest by Creative Communications. All winners would have their poem published by the company called A Celebration of Poets. All of the students' poems were selected to be published because of their complexity and difficulty of the writing. This is unusual, as the company's acceptance rate is usually about 50%. Congratulations to all of the poets and to Dr. Laughlin. We look forward to seeing you poems in print!

On Monday, the local Westminster 710 Rotary came to the Academy to distribute dictionaries to the 3rd grade students. For the past 10 years, the Rotary club has been distributing dictionaries to schools that reside in the boundaries of Westminster. The students anticipate this event, and they are excited to receive their own dictionary.
The Rotary feels this is a good age to start using a dictionary. This is not just any dictionary. Each book also contains important information such as an almanac, constitution, maps, sign language chart, and the kid’s favorite part the longest published word, which has 1,909 letters. The dictionary also has the students name in it!
We would like to thank the Rotary for giving their time and resources to help our students, especially Mr. Inman and Mr. Pugh.
The Academy is happy to announce that two of our 6th grade students were chosen as finalists in the Celebrating Art art contest. Tina Nguyen and Kianna Duran artwork was chosen to be published in a book of collected student works. Congratulations Tina and Kianna!

Dr. Sara Laughlin was asked to write an article for the Extraordinary Educator Newsletter published by Renaissance Learning (the publisher for Accelerated Reader and Accelerated Math). Dr.Laughlin has found great success with her students in these programs. Check out what she has to say about her success here.
The entire 8th grade went to the Adams County Career Expo at the Denver Merchandise Mart in November. More than 100 representatives from businesses, organizations and higher education institutions from around the Denver Metro Area were available for the students to meet and ask questions to learn about possibilities for their futures. This unit in 8th grade Science, the students are choosing one of four objectives from the state's Assessment Frameworks and have to create a model of the solar system to demonstrate their mastery of that concept. Never has learning been so fun!

On December 5th The Academy Drama Club left Westminster and traveled down to the 49th Colorado State Thespian Conference, hosted by the Colorado State Thespian Society at the Colorado Convention Center and the Hyatt Regency hotel, located in the heart of the Denver Performing Arts community. The Thespian Society is committed to the advancement of educational theatre and sponsors the Thespian Festivals and theatre workshops, along with producing educational materials and providing college scholarship opportunities for students who are interested in theatre. Spending three days and two nights at The Comfort Inn, and enduring the lengthy walks in the cold to the Convention Center, The Academy Drama Club was able to experience and learn from the workshops the Thespian Convention provided with thespians all around Colorado and from neighboring states. The Drama Club left for home on December 7th, and intend to share the knowledge they were given with those around them to help strengthen The Academy’s thespian community.
Broomfield Tri-County Lions would like to present the local winners of this years Lions International Peace Poster Contest from The Academy 6th grade classes. The theme this year was "Our World, Our Future". Congratulations to Josh Wagstaff (1st), Tina Nguyen (2nd), and Kianna Duran (3rd).

In keeping with a long-standing tradition, our second graders recently
participated in Immigration Day. Established by Ms. Lurvey when she
taught second grade at The Academy many years ago, Immigration Day is
a simulation designed to allow students to get a taste of what it was
like to immigrate to the United States through Ellis Island. Students
dressed in traditional clothing from their countries of origin and
went through learning stations including sailing to America, being
inspected and tested at Ellis Island, and celebrating citizenship.
Afterward, they enjoyed a feast of foods from around the world.
Thank you to all of our wonderful teachers and parent volunteers for
making Immigration Day a Success. Miss Smith's mom even got into the
act. (She was the Statue of Liberty.)
The Academy football team recently volunteered to serve meals to the homeless in Denver. "THANK YOU and your players and parents SO VERY MUCH!! The Hour of Code campaign has an audacious goal: to introduce 10 million students to one hour of computer science. While your children will have the opportunity to participate at school, I encourage you to participate, by visiting this website code.org to view the videos, try out some coding yourself (I did and it was quite addicting), watch how many lines are being coded across the U.S. this week, and have your children continue with learning coding at home. Who knows maybe you have the next programmer that will create something as popular as Angry Birds!

Parents and community members,
First of all, thank you for choosing The Academy to assist you with the education of your children. We assure you that all decisions made by the Academy Board of Directors are made in the best interest of the students.
Thank you to those of you who took the time to give us feedback on possible measurements for the new Strategic Plan. This plan will provide us with a measurable road map to increase student achievement and improve the learning environment in alignment with The Academy Mission.
The measurement committee came up with the following five measurements for the PreK-12 school as a whole: Graduation Rates, Internal Grades, College Acceptance, ACT Scores, and CSAP/TCAP scores. They are finalizing the culture measurements at this time. Please look for further updates that will be posted to the website.
In the midst of evaluating how best to achieve our goals, it has become apparent that there is a need for better PreK-12 alignment. To attain this ability we are supporting the Administration’s request to have a late start one day a week, beginning the 2012-2013 school year. During this time, the teachers and administration will be able to communicate and share ideas within a structured environment. This will benefit our children because it will give our great teachers the ability to become even better.
We are still working out logistics on the late start. To answer a few of the questions you might have:
1) There will be supervised areas available at both locations for children of families that need to be dropped off early.
2) This will not decrease our teaching time. Some of the other teacher in- service days have been eliminated.
3) We are currently planning on Tuesdays with a probable start time of around 9:30 a.m.
In trying to become more transparent to the members of our community, we wanted to get this information out to you as soon as possible to help you plan for the next school year. We will let you know more as it becomes finalized, so please look for more announcements to come.

Dear Parents of Secondary Students,
As the weather and driving conditions become more challenging in the winter, please follow the follow the following practices when dropping off and picking up your students in the rear of the school:
1. Pull your vehicle as far forward as possible. This includes moving forward to the area beyond the “crosswalk hump”. This area is designated as a secondary drop-off location and drivers are not using it effectively. There is plenty of room for everyone if we all do this.
2. Make sure that your children/riders are prepared to get out of the vehicle quickly so that you can be on your way and make room for other drivers.
3. Please use your blinkers when parking and pulling out of your parking area.
4. Watch for directions from the person attempting to direct traffic.
If we follow these practices, stress will be reduced, students will be on time for school and parents will be on time for the many obligations that they have during the day.
